Bulbs generally fall into two main categories, spring flowering bulbs which need planting in the autumn, and summer / autumn flowering bulbs which need planting in the spring.
Spring flowering bulbs are the most popular with species like Daffodils, Narcissi, Tulips, Alliums, Crocus and Snowdrops proving to be perennial favourites. By planting different varieties that flower at different times you can get colour in your garden from January to May. Most bulbs are equally happy planted into patio tubs and plant pots and this has become very popular in recent years as it means you can still plant bedding plants, vegetables or other plants in your garden and borders.
Summer flowering bulbs are easy to grow and are probably under-used by many gardeners as, in recent years, bedding plants have taken over at that time of year. Gladioli, Begonias, Crocosmia and Freesias all provide abundant colour in the summer and many can be used as a source of cut flowers for the house.
At Staunton Harold we select a range of quality bulbs from growers in Lincolnshire and Holland. Large bags at very reasonable prices can be obtained to order for those with larger gardens.
